Current Research: Most of our projects start with ecological questions generated from observations of plants and animals in the field. We are fortunate that Black Hills State University is located in the northern Black Hills, just minutes from diverse and varied habits. Questions often extend to mechanisms and evolution that underlie the species interactions, therefore plant physiology and genetics are incorporated into lab and field studies. We have also been using genomic tools to help identify relevant genes and pathways. To facilitate the integration of different disciplines and techniques, we focus on close wild relatives of model organisms. Specific questions of interest focus on the evolution of chemical defense mechanisms in plants.
