2018 Undergraduate Research Fellowship

Vermillion, SD - Forty-nine students were selected out of ninty-one applications to the 2018 SD BRIN Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows Program.  SD BRIN funded 19 students from Augustana University, 6 students from the University of Sioux Falls, 11 students from Black Hills State University, 3 students from Mount Marty College, 4 students from Dakota Wesleyan University, and 6 students from the University of South Dakota into the bioinformatics program.  The undergraduate researchers worked for 10 weeks at Augustana University, the University of Sioux Falls, Black Hills State University, Mount Marty College, Dakota Wesleyan University, the University of South Dakota, Sanford Research, Fernson Brewing, and OmegaQuant.  To end their summer, the students attended the 2018 EPSCoR/SD BRIN Undergraduate Research Symposium in Pierre, SD from July 25-26.  The symposium included presentations about medical and health professional schools and improving science communication.  The students also had the opportunity to listen to Sioux Falls native science writer, Sam Kean (The Disappearing Spoon, The Violinist's Thumb, etc.).  The undergraduate researchers concluded the symposium with a poster presentation of their research.
