Current Research: The research focus of the Klose group is measurement of trace gases in complex samples using laser spectroscopic techniques. One application of interest is the measurement of trace gases in exhaled breath that may be biomarkers for specific diseases. For example, patients that have renal failure often have elevated levels of ammonia in their exhaled breath. One means to detect trace gases is through cavity ring-down spectroscopy, where the sample gas is introduced into a vacuum-tight high finesse optical cavity where a single frequency laser interacts with the gas sample. The trace gas concentration can be deduced by measurement of the laser intensity as a function of frequency, often with sensitivities in the ppb range. The research outcome for the present project is the development of a cavity ring-down spectroscopic instrument for sensing of ammonia.
